Part of the holiday experience is hitting a luxurious spa that’s part of the resort you’re staying in. While with the restrictions lifted we can now visit our local spa centres, it does not feel the same. But there’s no need to feel disheartened. A home spa experience is a staycation-inspired alternative that’s no less luxe than the treatment you’d receive at the resort.
Creating Luxury Spa Experience at Home
You are probably confused: home spa was something we indulged in during long winter months spent in a lockdown, so why do it now? First of all, we have surely learned how to nail it. Secondly, no salon will ever meet you on the exact level you want and tick every box. At the end of the day, you’re the one who knows yourself best.
From choosing your favorite scented candles to working with your favorite products, creating your own spa experience puts you in control. And, therefore, allows you to create unforgettable, unique experiences.
Additionally, now that we are no longer prohibited to invite people over, you can share these moments (and some bubbly!) with the loved ones. A personalised spa day at the comfort of one’s house can be a memorable gift and a fabulous bonding experience.
Pampering Starts with Comfort
No spa experience is had in jeans. The first step of ensuring maximum relaxation is making sure you’re comfortable, warm, and surrounded by luxurious softness. Before you start the experience, you will need to do some homework: and namely, heat up the towels.
Soft, high quality materials that absorb moisture and feel great on the skin are what you want. Think Dries Van Noten here. Beautiful designs of these towels can also be a great contribution to creating the atmosphere.
And, of course, don’t forget about dressing gowns. Since the weather is much more favorable now than it was in winter, we suggest sliding into silky garments from Gilda & Pearl. A spa day is when you want everything to feel amazing against your skin.
Engage Your Senses
We’ve briefly touched on creating the atmosphere, and we must elaborate. From adopting neutral, natural color schemes to relax your eyes to playing music that soothes your mind, every smallest component plays a huge role.
But none of them is as powerful as scent. When we think of spa, the first thing we associate it with are smells - and since everyone’s nose is different, they may not always be the ones you’d go for.
Hosting a spa day within your own space allows you to choose the smell that should accompany your experience. We personally prefer Mad et Len scented candles.
Clean Body, Clean Mind
You’ve certainly heard that expression - and it’s being frequently used for a simple reason of it being true. The key appeal of spas is that by having our bodies cleansed we also tend to let go of our worries. The very act of cleaning one’s body has always been perceived as spiritual, therefore our ancestors wound up having a lot of bathing related rituals.
Of course, the ones we follow today have little to do with them. On the other hand, it is an undeniable truth that when we subject our bodies to deep cleaning, we simultaneously help our mental state, too. Combined with relaxation-aimed engagement of senses, spa experience at home allows you to build your own rituals and deeply personal experiences.
Running a Perfect Bath
In the past years add-ons to one’s bath have gotten increasingly popular. Once upon the time, bathing in rose petals sounded like the most original way of spice the experience up with additional luxe, but this has now changed.
From fizzing bath bombs that colour water in every shade and fill the tub with glitter to bath soaks to address that post-yoga ache (Mio Skincare yoga soak has our highest regards), the are limitless options of concocting your own magic body potion.
If scrubbing glitter off your tub after is a no from you, why not give Senteurs d’Orient bath salts a go instead? Just as fragrant as fizzy water devils, this solution is usually seen as more subtle and elegant. But again, you are in control of shaping your own experience, and therefore the choice is yours.
Soft, radiant skin is among the best things that spa days grant us. The magic behind those breathtaking results rests within either body butter, exfoliating scrubs or bath oils.
For example, Tom Dixon bath and shower oil is something you are likely to already have in your bathroom cabinet - because, let’s be honest, we’ve all received these as part of a Christmas hamper. Now is the best time to use them.
If you've a collection of Culti Milano body lotions you never come across using, a home spa day is a great opportunity for that. In other words, while a spa at the comfort of your house makes your body feel great, it also reminds you of all the great things you may have stored away. As well as ensuring they don’t go to waste.
Facing the Ultimate Relaxation
Finally, no spa day is really a spa day without a face mask. Cucumber slices on one’s eyes is rather cliche, but it has been confirmed to work. However, we have more interesting solutions in store.
Of course, nothing really beats home-made masks, but they can be rather time consuming and messy to make. In other words - not relaxing at all. This is when we turn to designer specialists of face care.
We love This Works brand for its natural and ethical approach to skin care. It’s genius in simplicity and while this may not be associated with elegance to some, this is one of many occasions when minimalism simply wins. If you more sophisticated facial products are closer to your heart, we recommend the Votary range. Packed with goodies and benefits, these masks will make you glow.
Facial Massage at Home
While, unfortunately, full body massage is not easily achieved during a staycation spa day (unless you hire a masseur!) facial massage is less complicated. The market is brimming with different times of face massage tools like Foreo’s LUNAtrade;2 massager, but your muscles alone will suffice.
'Make a V with our hand and rest your chin in the V. Pull your lips over your top teeth hold for 5 seconds and repeat (do this 10 times). Move the hand to either side of the chin with the length of your fingers covering your ears, and make the sound Eeeee with your mouth x 10. Put your ring fingers inside your mouth on either side, pull the skin to the side and use your jaw muscles to bring the fingers back in to touch your teeth x 10'
2. FISH POSE
'Hold your collarbone with your hands on either side, tilt your head back slowly till you feel a stretch and then start opening and closing your mouth like a fish making circles as if you were saying “ouch"'.
'Still holding your hands on your collarbone, look ahead and say eeeeeeek x 10 times'.
Although creation of a home spa experience may sound like a reminiscence of the lockdown months - it could be not further from the truth. In fact, the opportunity to tailor your own pampering session alongside your loved ones is better than what any resort spa could offer. Staycation remains being all about yourself, and revisiting luxurious home spa habits supports it.
So, why not invite your favorite people for a great day indoors? After all, retail spa experiences will never feel as personal and intimate as the ones that are personalised. Remember, cleaning one’s body is compared to a spiritual ritual. Don’t you want to share those special experiences with your loved ones?
