There is nothing worse than waking up on the day of a special occasion and realising your hair is not willing to cooperate. Women all over the world have come up with various tips and tricks to avoid hairdo malfunctions, be it washing the hair a day earlier or the night before. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. It might all seem in vain as hair is often unpredictable. But we guarantee: it’s not as bad as you think. In fact, there is a handful of luxury haircare tips we know are fail-proof.
A good hair day can make you feel like you can conquer the world - wouldn’t you wish to feel this way every day? Most of us spend years perfecting our hair routines, techniques and formulas, inevitably blowing thousands of pounds testing products. However, there are specific care tips and products we swear by. Are you ready to never experience a bad hair day again? If the answer is yes, then read on.
- Know your hair
Before you dive headfirst into luxury haircare, you need to determine what your hair is like. Be honest with yourself, listing everything the way it is instead of how you’d like it to be - is your hair oily? Is it thin? Thick? Does it have a tendency to get curly? Do you dye it? Is it bleached? How bad are your split ends? Knowing your hair and its texture will bring all the difference in the world, and therefore you must stay realistic. What works for your friend’s natural beach waves won’t have the same effect on your straight, bleached locks. Knowing your hair type is the equivalent of knowing your skin type - read: essential. Once you have the right idea of what kind of locks you’ve got, luxury haircare will prove to be a good 50% less complicated. You will be surprised how important this knowledge is: even the choice of a hairbrush should depend on it.
- Focus on the roots
While you cannot permanently fix the hair you already have, nourishing the roots is what will grant you the luxurious locks you’re after. Treat your scalp like you would your skin - with extra care, love and affection. Regardless of what your hair type is, luxury haircare begins at the roots: your scalp must be clean and taken care of. Shampoos do clean it, of course, but your scalp needs more attention than just that. Every few washes, pamper yourself with a scalp scrub (we recommend one from Christophe Robin). Micellar Shampoos are known to work just as well: they’re gentle and cleansing, soothing your scalp and restoring its pH. However, they tend to leave the hair a little flat, and thus should be treated more as a scalp-treat rather than a day-to-day product.
- Do you wash your hair correctly?
This may sound like an odd question. But you will be surprised how many people don’t do it right and are completely oblivious to the fact. First of all you should ask yourself: how often do you wash your hair? If the answer is daily, you’re doing it wrong. No luxurious haircare product is designed to be used daily, and if anything, it will strip your natural oils regardless of how good it is. You will also notice that the more frequently you wash your hair, the quicker it gets greasy - a never-ending circle, really. The ultimate answer would be washing it 2-3 times a week, this way not interfering with your scalp’s natural oil production and yet keeping it clean. When it comes to washing, remember to only apply shampoo to your roots and massage it into your scalp - don’t spread it through the length of hair. It’s the opposite when it comes to conditioning: apply the products on the ends of your hair only, and keep them away from the roots.
- The heat is your enemy
We guarantee you must have heard this a billion of times before. But have you acted on it? Avoiding heat on your hair is what helps it stay healthy - this is the cheapest and easiest practice of luxury haircare known to humanity. Allow your hair to dry naturally than blow-drying it, replace curling irons by hair rollers, and use straightening spray instead of the hot tool. Sure, all these methods are more time consuming and demand more dedication, but if the health of your hair is on the stake, does it even matter? We understand there are instances when hot tools cannot be avoided, however. Be it a last-minute invite to a fancy event, or simply not having the time to spend on the long processes of naturally drying it - but this doesn’t mean your efforts will go to waste. Invest into some of the Oribe’s range of heat protectors and you will be able to minimise the damage.
- Give your hair some love
If overnight masks are your standard practice, ask yourself why haven’t you considered it for your hair? Despite this being the last point of the list, most people associate luxury haircare solely with the hair masks and rightfully so: they’re amazing. Ranging from oils by Ouai to creamy scalp detox from ACT+ACRE, there are plenty of great products out there that will nourish your hair with all things great as you rest, making them soft and silky on the morrow. However, if sleeping with something in your hair is not your cup of tea - you don’t have to. Most masks are ready to be rinsed out after as short as 20 minutes. While this all sounds like a tedious amount of effort, we promise, this works miracles. Hair masks effectively remove build-ups, nourish and moisturise the scalp and bring out all the best qualities of your hair.
