Magda Butrym is the brand founded by Magdalena Butrym. A luxury ready-to-wear brand launched from Warsaw in 2014.
Prior to starting the brand, Magdalena co-created the minimalist label Portofino, using her celebrity connections to promote the line, however the business was short lived and was axed after just a few seasons. Then in 2010 Butrym was hired by Joanna Przetakiewicz (wife to Jan Kulczyk) to create La Mania. Money was no object for the endeavour, and the brand was targeting the pinnacle of Polish society, it even garnered support from Karl Lagerfeld. Yet in 2014, Butrym made the decision to abandon her comfort of La Mania to launch her own label.
After launching in 2014 she shot onto the scene. Her collections intertwine both a feminine and masculine approach, often displaying oversized contemporary romanticism. An array of irregularity often means chiffon dresses or blazers with feathers jutting from one side, decadent coats, asymmetrical shirt dresses, sensually draped skirts and pulse racing cocktail dresses all underpinned by high-quality delicate materials.
"I create fashion pieces with a 'soul' for the modern woman who uses fashion as a means of expressing her individuality and character." Butrym on defining her brand.
Handcrafted excellence is a staple in Butrym's work. The collections have featured hand woven textiles and hand plaited leathers as well as hand knitted fabrics and embroidered ornaments. Key fashion journalists have compared her line to the infamous French label Céline or the YSL of the 1960s. She herself quotes Halston of the 1970s as a major inspiration. Butryms craftsmen come from local regions in Poland including Podhale, Silesia, Nowy Targ and Warsaw. The commitment and passion of the artisans is reflected in the caliber of their work, each product carefully crafted with unique details and refinements.
