Fashion is a circle. Trends once gone have a tendency to return, hence the industry’s ongoing joke about the cycle repeating approximately every 20 years. Some trends do still get labeled as ones that are not welcome back: exposed thong fashion is one such.
However, although we believed the wild trend sported by celebrities in ’00s had long since been banished from most of the underwear drawers, it may be making a resurgence. While fashion retailers are shocked to see thong sales jumped by 72% from the previous year, solemn fans of high fashion had long since predicted the comeback of it.
Hints had been subtly presented during this year’s Met Gala, where several celebrities, such as Hailey Bieber and Alexander Wang, were proudly showing off a thong straps. This past week alone presented a rock solid evidence of thong fashion preparing itself for a glorious return. At Versace’s Spring 2020 men’s show, Bella Hadid strolled down the catwalk wearing black trousers with a matching thong line, spiced up by two Versace Medusa medallions.
Despite thong fashion being a throwback to Britney Spears era, often labeled as a ‘00s trend that ‘needs to be forgotten’, we think it’s fair to say it is officially back. However, the twist it takes in 2019 is still different from the loud and vulgar approach taken at the dawn of the millennia.
According to Vogue market editor Alexandra Gurvitch, the comeback of thong fashion is to carry more subtlety and chic. “If you are daring enough to expose your hips, you might as well make your look minimal and clean,” she suggested, advising to wear thong as a tasteful accessory with plain trousers.
“To avoid looking like you’ve had a wardrobe malfunction, I’d recommend wearing a thong that has some sort of embellishment or exaggerated strap that’s worth showing off.”
Many iconic ’00s trends are back in 2019, ranging from leopard print and thong fashion to hair clips and tiny-strap sandals. In fact, many apparel details widely criticised in the past 20 years are slowly coming back. Make sure to be the first one to get them: take a look around Kture, the home of the newest arrivals.
